UPDATE: Man Killed by Hit-and-Run Vehicle after Attending Brazillian Concert in Newark

Newark --- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes Newark Police detectives, is investigating a fatal hit and run.

Police identified the victim as Woodvald Garcia de Souza, 43, of Newark.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicated that just before 1 a.m. today, the victim left a concert at the Newark Waterfront Center featuring a Brazilian musician.

While crossing McCarter Highway, Garcia de Souza was struck by a motor vehicle and sustained severe injuries.

EMS transported Garcia de Souza to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:48 am.

The vehicle that hit the victim did not stop.

Authorities said the investigation is active and ongoing.
