The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is leading an investigation into a violent shooting that left a man dead on a busy East Orange street on Friday night.

According to preliminary reports, a ShotSpotter alert went off just before 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Shepard and Central avenues, one of the city’s most active corridors.
When officers arrived, they discovered a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Police immediately taped off the area, detoured traffic, and called for emergency medical services.
The victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
Detectives combed the surrounding area, which had been reported by residents for prior criminal activity, searching for potential suspects and evidence before crime scene units from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office arrived to take over the investigation.
No arrests have been reported, and officials have not released the identity of the victim or a possible motive.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
