Authorities in Essex County said The Prosecutor’s Office Crime Scene Investigations Bureau (CSIB) is investigating a pedestrian-vehicle collision that resulted in the death of Mr. Laquan Lamar Jones, 49, of Newark.

According to a statement released by Essex County Spokesman Robert Florida,  on Sunday, May 28, at about 1:55 a.m., a vehicle traveling in the 600 block of Springfield Avenue (at 14th Street) in Newark struck Jones.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:18 a.m.

But witnesses told RLS Media that they believe they saw Mr. Jones operating a vehicle that was going over 75 miles per hour when he crashed into several cars.

Witnesses say the impact of the crash caused Jones to violently eject from the car causing his legs to detach. Essex authorities have not confirmed nor denied the witness accounts.

A female also involved in the collision suffered serious injuries.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
