The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is taking the lead in a shooting that left a man dead in the city's West Ward on Monday evening.
Newark Police responded to multiple rounds of gunfire that rang out in the 20's block of Abbotsford Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. where officers arrived at the scene to find a male victim suffering a gunshot wound to the head.
According to a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, EMS rushed the unidentified victim to University Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead a short time later.
Authorities say a black male suspect was observed running away from the scene towards East Orange.
The identity of the victim has not been released at this time.
