UPDATE: Man Charged with Paterson Shooting Homicide

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Shaquan Harrell, 27-years-old, from Paterson, was arrested on June 6, in relation to a shooting investigation that took place June 2, 2019 in the area of 54 North 3rd Street, Paterson.

Police say Mr. Harrell is charged with two counts of Attempted Murder, First Degree; two counts of Aggravated Assault, Second Degree; two counts of Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose, Second Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Second Degree; and Certain Persons not to possess a Firearm, Second Degree.

According to police on June 2, members of the Paterson Police Department responded to the area of 54 North 3rd Street, Paterson, on a report of shots fired.

Upon arrival police located two victims, a 27-year-old male Paterson resident and a 25-year-old male Paterson resident who had sustained gunshot wounds.

The victims were immediately transported to Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson for treatment according to police.

Based on the investigation Mr. Harrell was identified as the shooter but was not on scene.

The sentencing exposure for Mr. Harrell on each count of First Degree Attempted Murder is 10- 20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of those terms to be served before parole pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 5 years parole supervision; on each count of Second Degree Aggravated Assault it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of those terms to be served before parole pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 3 years parole supervision; on each count of Second Degree Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 42 months before parole eligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Firearm it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 42 months before parole eligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Second Degree Certain Persons not to possess a Firearm it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 5 years before parole eligibility.

Mr. Harrell is currently in the custody of the Passaic County Jail.

The State has filed a motion for pretrial detention in this matter that will be heard by a Superior Court Judge on June 11th.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
