A Newark neighborhood remains heartbroken after the tragic death of Ms. Shaneequah Williams, a woman many described as a “bright light” in the community, but residents say they are feeling a measure of relief knowing a suspect is now in custody.

The fatal shooting, which authorities believe may have been an act of domestic violence, happened sometime before 11 a.m.
Saturday near 89 Astor Street. Neighbors reported hearing screams and what sounded like gunfire before police arrived to find Williams suffering from gunshot wounds.

Despite urgent efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Williams, remembered for her warmth and community spirit, worked at a local lodge and was a familiar, friendly face to many in the area.
Friends and neighbors have flooded social media with tributes, calling her passing an “unimaginable loss” and sharing memories of her kindness.
Law enforcement sources identified the suspect as 42-year-old Mr. Kasim McDonald, a City of Newark employee.

McDonald reportedly fled the scene in a light-colored vehicle, prompting an extensive search that reached as far as Carteret in Middlesex County.
He was later taken into custody and charged with several weapons offenses, including unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and certain persons not to have a weapon due to a prior conviction.
While the investigation remains active and ongoing, residents say the arrest offers some comfort during a time of deep grief.
“It doesn’t bring her back, but at least we know he’s not out there,” one neighbor said.
Officials continue to urge anyone with information to contact law enforcement as they work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
