While county authorized continued to investigate the circumstances behind the shooting, a preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 8:50 p.m., officials at University Hospital notified Newark Police when a male victim entered the emergency room suffering gunshot wounds.

Authorities were told that the shooting happened at an address in the area of 18th Avenue near Columbia Avenue.

During the investigation, police discovered that one other victim suffered gunshot wounds, in which one of the injured was confirmed as a fatality by The Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The shooting happened in or around a store located at 899 18th Avenue. Police say a third person found injured was not shot.

During heavy rain and degrading weather conditions, detectives from Newark Police and The Essex County Prosecutor's Office converged on the area to find whatever crime scene and evidence they could.

That portion of the West Ward and its neighborhood is no stranger to continued shootings, open-air drug trafficking, and random violence near the Newark Fire Department's Headquarters for many years.

The investigation into what prompted this shooting is in its early stages.

No arrests have been reported.
