UPDATE: Male Killed in Newark West Ward Shooting

Detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are currently looking into a shooting that left a man dead near a home in the city's West Ward on Tuesday evening.

According to a statement released by a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office, at approximately 6:25 p.m., Newark Police officials were notified of shots fired in the vicinity of 226 Alexander Street.

West District units arriving at the scene found the severely wounded victim lying on the ground in a driveway of a home after someone shot him at that location.

Officers reportedly provided life-saving medical assistance until EMS arrived at the scene and began to assist the victim.

According to the prosecutor's office, medical personnel pronounced the victim dead a short time later.

Officials say the suspect responsible for firing the weapon fled the scene towards 18th Avenue immediately after the shooting.

Authorities have not released the identity of the victim or the motive for the shooting.

The Alexander Street incident was the second fatal shooting on Tuesday and the third in less than seven days.
