A tragic shooting in Newark’s West Ward Thursday evening claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy and left another teen critically injured, according to authorities.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, which is leading the investigation, said the gunfire erupted around 6:00 p.m. near 227 Brookdale Avenue.
Two teenage males were struck and transported to University Hospital for treatment.

One of the victims was later pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m., while the other, a 17-year-old, remains in critical condition.
Law enforcement officials confirmed Friday that the teen who died was a student at Irvington High School and a member of the school’s football team.
He has since been identified as Ziad Cook, a well-known athlete with strong ties to the school community.
Earlier reports by RLS Media noted that someone had walked into the hospital with gunshot wounds.
Authorities have since clarified that the individual was the 16-year-old victim from the Brookdale Avenue shooting.
Cook’s death has sent shockwaves through Irvington High School, where grief counselors have been made available to support students and staff.
He was remembered by those who knew him as focused, disciplined, and dedicated to both his academics and athletics.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force continues to investigate the incident. No arrests have been announced, and a motive has not yet been determined.
