UPDATE: Investigation Continues in Shooting That Left a Senior Man Dead in Newark

On Sunday, residents in a section of Newark observed heavy police presence and SWAT operate in a community where a senior man was gunned down on Saturday afternoon. 

The preliminary investigation indicated that at approximately 1:44 p.m., gunfire rang out in the vicinity of 166 South 7th Street, sending police to the scene to investigate.

Shooting

Upon arrival, police found an unidentified male suffering bullet wounds at that location.

Police say the victim was rushed the short distance to University Hospital for treatment but did not survive the shooting.

Fatal Shooting

Residents said Newark Emergency Services Unit and heavily armed Special Weapons and Tactic officers closed off the block before 3:30 p.m. and searched a home for a person believed to be involved in the shooting. 

According to residents, the neighborhood that sits just at the border of Central and West wards has become a staple of illegal drug trafficking and criminal activity for 'quite some time.'

Fatal shooting

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has not released a motive for the fatal shooting at this time.
