UPDATE: Homicide Investigation Underway for 55-Year-Old Man Found Dead on Street in Irvington

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office are looking into the motive behind an assault that left a man dead on a street in the Essex County Township of Irvington on Friday morning.

In what police are calling an isolated incident, officers were called to the vicinity of Nye Avenue and Nesbitt after receiving reports of an injured person at around 8 a.m.

Upon arrival, officials say police found an unconscious and unresponsive Mr. James Braxton, 55, lying on the ground suffering a head injury near the bank.

Police say Braxton was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, Braxton was engaged in an argument with an unidentified man when the two engaged in a physical altercation.

Police believe that the suspect struck Braxton in the head with an object then ran from the scene.

The incident is under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Irvington Township Police.
