UPDATE: Gunman Fires 23 Shots, Killing Newark Man in Avon Avenue Shooting

A Newark man is dead after being at shot 23 times in a brutal attack that unfolded just after midnight Monday, authorities said.

According to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, police responded to reports of gunfire near 376 Avon Avenue shortly after 12:00 a.m. on July 22, 2025.

 

Officers arrived to find 33-year-old Michael Howard of Newark inside a white Chrysler 300, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. 

 

He was rushed to University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
 

Investigators confirmed that the gunman fired at the victim 23 times. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is leading the investigation, which remains active and ongoing. 

 

No arrests have been reported at this time.
