UPDATE: Gunman Fired Multiple Shots That Killed Newark Man

The Essex County Prosector’s Office has taken the lead in an investigation into a shooting that killed a Newark man near the border of the city’s Central and South wards.

According to a preliminary investigation, gunfire rang out in the vicinity of 174 Avon Avenue around 12:50 a.m. sending police to the scene to investigate.

When officers got there, they found a severely injured Mr. Larry Oliver lying on the ground suffering multiple bullet wounds in his face, chest and leg.

Officials said they believe the gunman approached Oliver and began to fire at point-blank range before fleeing the scene.

According to officials, Oliver was pronounced dead a short time later by medical personnel.

Police taped off a section of Avon Avenue while detective searched the area for evidence to support a motive for the shooting.

The investigation into the fatal shooting is in its early stages and the suspect remains at-large.
