UPDATE: Gunman Fatally Shoots Male in Newark's Central Ward

Detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation into a shooting that left a man dead in a section of Newark's Central Ward on Monday night.

According to preliminary reports, residents in the 200 block of 18th Avenue -near Boyd Street- dialed 911 when they heard several loud popping noises just before 7:55 p.m.

Several Newark Police units arrived at the scene and requested EMS on a rush after locating a male victim suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

The unidentified victim was rushed to University Hospital, where medical professionals pronounced him dead a short time later, according to Essex County officials.

Back at the crime scene, police taped off the area while detectives collected shell casings and other evidence to assist in their investigation.

The motive for the shooting has not been determined and the shooter remains at-large.
