UPDATE: Gunfire Kills Teen in Newark's West Ward

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony f. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating a fatal shooting in Newark on Thursday night.

Newark police officers shortly before 8 p.m., were dispatched to a liquor store on the 900 block of South Orange Avenue on reports of shots fired.

Arriving officers observed the victim, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, near the entrance to the store.

The victim, who has been identified as Armani D. McPhall, 19 of Newark, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly, who added that the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
