Several good samaritans came to the aid of a woman who was attacked by a mentally distressed man who attempted to rob the victim in Newark's Downtown Wednesday evening.
Police were dispatched to the intersection of Cedar Street and Broad Street to investigate reports of a physical altercation around 5:20 p.m.
Units arrived and found several individuals detaining a man who was involved in an attempted robbery at that location.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect attempted to rob the victim and then began assaulting her when the woman resisted giving up personal possessions.
The suspect was taken into custody by Newark Police and then transferred to University Hospital for an evaluation.
The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
