A massive multi-alarm fire tore through several buildings in Newarkâs Ironbound section late Friday night, injuring firefighters and displacing dozens of residents.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, crews were dispatched at approximately 10:27 p.m. to 196 Jefferson Street for reports of a fire.
A second alarm was struck just minutes later at 10:31 p.m. as flames intensified, with a third alarm called at 1:05 a.m. Saturday, bringing more than 100 firefighters to the scene.
Officials said the fire began at 196 Jefferson Street before spreading to neighboring buildings at 194, 192, 190, and 188 Jefferson Street. Firefighters battled heavy flames for hours before bringing the blaze under control at approximately 3:24 a.m.

Six firefighters were injured during the response and transported to University Hospital for treatment. Authorities said all injuries were non-life-threatening.
No civilian injuries have been reported; however, 59 residents have been displaced as a result of the fire.
The Newark Office of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross remained on scene assisting displaced residents with temporary housing and support.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under active investigation by the Newark Fire Division Arson Unit.
