UPDATE: Father of Three Children Shot Dead on Street in Newark's North Ward

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a violent shooting that left the father of three children dead in a section of Newark's North Ward early Wednesday evening.

According to authorities, police units for The Essex County Sheriff's Office, NJIT and Newark Police departments responded **[to reports of shots fired that rang out around 5 p.m. in the 90's block of 7th Avenue](https://www.rlsmedia.com/article/breaking-male-shot-head-newarks-north-ward)**.

Upon arrival, police encountered a large uncooperative crowd who began to engage in a physical confrontation at that location. Once police gained control of the scene, they found an unconscious and responsive male suffering gunshot wounds in his head at that location.

The victim, identified as Mr. Roger Coleman, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical professionals.

According to preliminary reports, one person was detained by NJIT police and a weapon was recovered but authorities have not confirmed that the suspect is being held for the death of Mr. Coleman.

Residents in the area told RLS Media that Coleman, who they know as "Snap," is a father of three young children - two boys and a girl - and frequents the area.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation and there were no other injuries reported in the shooting.
