UPDATE: Fatal Injuries Confirmed After Garbage Truck Crashes into Car in Old Bridge

Authorities in Middlesex County are on the scene of a crash with fatal injuries reported on a highway in Old Bridge. 

Police and EMS were dispatched to the vicinity of NJ-34 and Spring Hill Road to investigate reports of a crash around 5:30 a.m. 

Upon arrival, police found a garbage truck on top of a car with a trapped occupant at that location. 

Police say the individual inside the car was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The cause of the collision is under investigation and no other severe injuries were reported. 

Update 8:30 a.m.:

Old Bridge Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred today, Jan. 5, at 5:35 a.m. 

According to authorities, a gray Honda Accord exited the parking lot of Future Pharmacy (near the intersection of Spring Hill Road) onto Rt. 34, directly into the path of a Solterra garbage truck, which was traveling south on Rt. 34.

Police say the truck was unable to stop in time, colliding with the Honda.

Old Bridge officials say the driver of the Honda, a 59-year-old female resident of Old Bridge Township was pronounced at the scene.

Officials say there were no other occupants inside the Honda. The driver of the garbage truck was not injured.

This is an active investigation.

Authorities say the name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

At the time of this release, officials state that Rt. 34 remains closed for investigation.
