According to preliminary information, crews were dispatched just before 5:15 p.m. to 303 South Michigan Avenue (Crabbae Restaurant) after multiple 911 calls reported a fire inside a two-story building.

When firefighters arrived, they found active flames on the first floor, where the restaurant is located.

The fire quickly intensified, prompting officials to strike additional alarms as crews from surrounding Union County municipalities responded to assist.

Firefighters stretched multiple lines and worked aggressively to contain the blaze as it spread through portions of the structure.

After bringing the fire under control, crews entered the building to search for any trapped or injured occupants.

Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported.

Despite the quick response, the fire caused extensive interior damage. The restaurant was heavily impacted, and the residential units on the second floor have been deemed uninhabitable but was reportedly unoccupied.

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation by local fire officials.

For many in the community, the damage hits close to home. I recently visited the restaurant and experienced firsthand why it had become such a favorite.

The food (simply delicious), known for its Caribbean fusion flavors and generous portions, stood out, but so did the atmosphere—welcoming, vibrant, and filled with energy.

The staff were professional, the service was excellent, and the environment made it a place people returned to—not just for a meal, but for the overall experience.

Now, as the investigation continues, many are hoping the restaurant’s ownership will be able to rebuild.

For a place that brought so much to the local dining scene, the loss is being felt beyond just the structure itself. I am saddened, as well.

Still, officials emphasized one key takeaway, despite the damage, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported.
