UPDATE: Essex Prosecutor Investigate Double Newark Homicides

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating two unrelated shooting incidents in which two males were fatally wounded.

Authorities said the first incident occurred Sunday, in the 200 block of South 11th Street where at approximately 7:40 p.m., Newark police officers were dispatched to this location on reports of shots fired.

As the officers arrived, they located a male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds and the victim was rushed to University Hospital.

This victim, who has been identified as **Keywon Savage, age 20, of Newark**, succumbed to his injuries at 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Squad.

According to authorities, the second incident occurred on Tuesday evening at approximately 7:48 p.m., where Newark officers were dispatched to an apartment building in the 100 block of First Street on a report of a shooting.

Arriving officers located an unresponsive male in an upper floor stairwell.

The male, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Fennelly, who added that the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Both incidents are being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

Both investigations are active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
