UPDATE: Essex County Prosecutor Charges Driver of Garbage Truck who Fled Deadly Pedestrian Strike of Elderly Man

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office arrested the driver of a garbage truck after a hit and run incident left a male senior citizen dead on Friday afternoon in Newark.

According to a statement released by Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly, **Mr. Napoleon Tolbert, 53,** was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash and failure to render aid to an injured victim after he drove a Garbage truck that struck a 72-year-old man near the intersection of Lincoln Park and Pennsylvania Avenue at approximately 1:35 p.m.

The truck is owned by The Basso Company officials say.

According to Chief Fennelly, Tolbert was remanded to The Essex County Correctional Facility pending a court appearance while officials continue to work in locating the next of kin for the decedent.

The charges against the defendant are merely allegations, and he is presumed innocent at this time.
