UPDATE: Emotionally Distressed Jersey City Man Produced a Weapon Before he was Shot Police say

According to a statement released by authorities, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Jersey City Police Officers were dispatched to 144 Orient Avenue in Jersey City on a report of a violent emotional disturbed male.

Authorities say upon arrival, responding officers entered 144 Orient Avenue and were directed to the first floor where they engaged the individual and attempted to calm him.

Their attempts were unsuccessful, and ultimately, after the man produced a weapon, one of the officers discharged his service weapon officials said.

The individual, later identified as a 36-year-old man who lived at that address with his parents, was

struck in the torso then transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical

Center where he is in critical, but stable condition.

Pursuant to Attorney General guidelines, the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor has taken over the investigation from the Jersey City Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Internal Affairs Unit is in the early stages of the investigation.

The New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice was immediately notified of the incident Jersey City authorities said.
