UPDATE: Elizabeth Police Unit Responding to Attempted Suicide Call Involved in Car Crash

Elizabeth

Police in Elizabeth are investigating a crash that involved a police vehicle Thursday morning.

According to a statement released by Elizabeth City Spokeswoman Kelly Martins, at approximately 12:15 a.m., police dispatch received a call from the suicide hotline that a female caller stated shooting her boyfriend at 819 Spring Street (Motel 6) and was contemplating suicide.

Spokeswoman Martins said an Elizabeth Police unit responding to the emergency was involved in a motor vehicle crash on Route 1&9 Northbound at Filmore Street.

According to Martins, the police vehicle was traveling northbound on Route 1&9 with its emergency lights and siren activated when it encountered heavy water in the roadway from active rainy weather conditions.

Upon contact with the water, the police vehicle hydroplaned, resulting in loss of vehicle control, which then sent the car rolling over.

Spokeswoman Martins said the police vehicle entered the McDonalds parking lot while overturning and struck a parked car in the lot leading to a multi-vehicle crash.

The crime in progress and suicide attempt was investigated and determined to be fictitious and the officers suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The Elizabeth Police Detective Bureau is investigating the incident and will determine and pursue all appropriate criminal charges from the investigation.
