UPDATE: Elizabeth Police Investigates Stabbing of Homeless Man

Authorities in Elizabeth are investigating the motive behind a stabbing that left a man injured on an Elizabeth Street on Sunday afternoon.

According to a preliminary investigation released by city spokesperson Kelly Martin, the incident happened at approximately 4:35 p.m. in the vicinity of Jackson Avenue and Bond Street where police received notice of an altercation at that location.

Upon officers arrival at the scene, spokesperson Martin said police found a 51-year-old uncooperative male suffering a stab injury at that location.

EMS transported the victim to University Hospital in Newark where spokesperson Martin said he remains in stable condition.

While police are actively investigating, it appears that the man was involved in a verbal altercation with one or more suspects when it escalated into physical violence according to spokesperson Martin.

There were no arrests immediately made.
