According to information sent by Elizabeth Police, officers with the Neighborhood Special Unit (NSU) surrounded the 1000 block of Olive Street while attempting to locate the suspect.

As entry was made through the front of the home with consent, Elizabeth Police officials said another officer positioned in the backyard was suddenly confronted by a large pit bull.

The animal charged at the officer and bit him, prompting the officer to fire his weapon. The dog was fatally struck and died instantly.

Emergency medical services transported the officer for treatment following the incident. His condition has not yet been disclosed.

Officials said the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Shooting Response Team, along with the Internal Affairs Unit, Captain, and the Union County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene to conduct a full investigation.

Authorities later confirmed the robbery incident was tied to an ongoing domestic violence case.
