UPDATE: Elizabeth Authorities Investigate Two Crashes; One Fatality

Authorities in Elizabeth are investigating two separate crashes that left one person dead a two others injured in the city.

The first incident occurred at around 11:50 p.m. in the northbound local lanes of Rt. 1&9 near the Newark International Airport entrances.

According to police, a car collided with a garbage truck on the highway pinning the driver inside the vehicle.

The female driver was transported to University Hospital suffering life threatening injuries.

Police said during the incident, several pedestrians attempted to assist the driver from the vehicle when a third vehicle struck the pedestrians causing minor injuries.

In the other incident, emergency responders rushed to Jersey Gardens Boulevard after receiving reports of a two-vehicle crash shortly before 11 a.m.

Upon arrival, police observed a severely damaged small passenger car that had collided with a tractor trailer at that location.

A preliminary investigation indiacated that the car lost control and ended up into the path of tractor trailer.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead a short time later at an area hospital police said.

Both incidents remain under investigation.
