UPDATE: East Orange School Bus Driver Charged with DUI Following Crash

A 52-year-old school bus driver has been charged with driving under the influence and endangering the welfare of a child after he reportedly struck five cars, two traffic poles and a fire hydrant in East Orange and Orange Tuesday.

According to authorities, the driver, later identified as Wayne Carmichel, of Paterson, was driving the bus - occupied by a 9-year-old child and a bus aide - sometime between 8:10 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. when the accidents occurred.

Police say the accidents occurred at Park and North Arlington avenues, William Street, North Oraton Parkway and at Springdale and Glenwood avenues in East Orange. The final incident occurred at Dodd Street and Thomas Boulevard in Orange Township. 

In addition to charges, Carmichel was also issued a summons for driving with a suspended license and reckless driving.

The incident remains under investigation.

According to authorities, Carmichel was the only one injured.
