Authorities said Kawuan Nickels was riding a 2009 Kawasaki ZX600 motorcycle near Halstead Street and Edgar Street around 5:15 p.m. when he sideswiped a vehicle turning into the northbound lane.

The impact caused Nickels to lose control of the motorcycle, which then crashed into the rear of a parked, unoccupied SUV.

Nickels was transported to University Hospital in Newark, where he later died from his injuries, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police said the motorcycle was unregistered.

Although Nickels had a Pennsylvania driver’s license in his possession, it was later determined that his driving privileges had been suspended.
