Authorities in Newark are searching for answers after a tragic accident claimed the life of a woman who remains unidentified.
According to a statement released by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident happened just before 6 a.m. on Monday, August 11, at the McDonald’s on West Market Street near Bergen Street.
Investigators believe the woman may have been homeless.
Officials said a truck and trailer making its first delivery of the morning turned into the restaurant’s driveway when the driver noticed what appeared to be a grey blanket on the ground.
Unaware that anyone was beneath it, the driver continued his turn until he heard a crushing noise.
He stopped, got out, and saw the woman.
The driver immediately alerted McDonald’s staff to call police. Emergency responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
The driver remained on site and is cooperating fully.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is urging anyone who may know the woman’s identity to contact them, hoping to give her a name and inform her loved ones.
