The incident, first reported by RLS Media, happened when a dispute involving a large group of individuals escalated in the area between Walmart and the neighboring Wawa gas station, drawing officers from multiple law enforcement agencies to the scene.

In an update provided to RLS Media early Monday morning, Kearny Police Lieutenant Michal Gontarczuk said the incident was documented as a call for service involving approximately 30 people engaged in a dispute.

According to Lt. Gontarczuk, officers from the Kearny Police Department were joined by members of the Hudson County Sheriff's Office, Harrison Police Department, and North Arlington Police Department in responding to the scene, where two large crowds had gathered in the roadway between the businesses.

Police determined that a physical fight had occurred before officers arrived. However, no life-threatening injuries were reported, and all individuals involved declined medical treatment, according to authorities.

Lt. Gontarczuk stated that investigators believe at least some of the individuals involved had participated in demonstrations and counter-demonstrations related to the ongoing activity surrounding Delaney Hall in Newark.

Authorities said that connection may have contributed to the initial dispute, although the investigation remains active.

When RLS Media arrived at the scene Saturday, officers from multiple agencies were already working to restore order, secure the area, and separate those involved.

Witnesses described the confrontation as beginning with a verbal dispute before escalating into a physical altercation.

Kearny authorities have not confirmed allegations made by witnesses regarding the circumstances that led to the fight, and investigators continue reviewing surveillance footage and statements from those involved.

Throughout the response, law enforcement officers maintained a visible presence while managing a crowded shopping center filled with customers and families.

The incident took place quite a distance from the Walmart front entrance which also added to officers’ leverage.

The coordinated effort quickly brought the situation under control and prevented further escalation.

Particularly notable was the professionalism displayed by Kearny police officers, who established a secure perimeter around the active investigation while ensuring public safety and maintaining access for shoppers and businesses in the area.

Officers also worked cooperatively with members of the media, directing journalists to designated locations where they could safely observe and report on developments without interfering with the investigation.

The incident comes at a time when police departments throughout northern New Jersey have been called upon to assist with demonstrations, traffic management, and public safety operations connected to ongoing activity surrounding Delaney Hall.
