The Newark community is in mourning after a woman many described as a “bright light” in the community was shot and killed Saturday morning in what investigators believe may have been a case of domestic violence. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that they are leading the investigation into the violent incident, which occurred sometime before 11 a.m. near 89 Astor Street.
Residents told RLS Media that they heard screams, and some believed they were hearing gunfire before police arrived.

When officers reached the scene, they found a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite urgent efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Family and friends identified the victim as Ms. Shaneequah Williams, a well-known and deeply respected figure in Newark who they said worked at a local lodge.
Sources close to the investigation said detectives are seeking a man who may have had a past relationship with Williams.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene in a light-colored vehicle. As of early Sunday morning, no arrests had been announced, and authorities have not publicly released the suspect’s name.
News of Williams’ death has shaken the community, with hundreds taking to social media to share memories, offer condolences, and express disbelief.
Many posts called her passing an “unimaginable loss” and urged support for her grieving family.
The investigation remains active and ongoing, and officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
