UPDATE: Authorities Identify 30-Year-Old Man Killed by Gunfire in Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose, III have announced that authorities are investigating a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Newark on Saturday.

Police say it occurred shortly before 6:00 pm on Saturday, Newark police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Avon Avenue on reports of shots fired.

Arriving officers located two males suffering from apparent gunshot wounds at that location.

Both victims were transported to University Hospital.

Police say one of the victims, who has been identified as Mr. Elijah J. Roberts, of 30 of Newark, was pronounced dead at 6:36 pm, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit.

The second victim was treated for a non-life threatening injury.

The incident remains under investigation.
