UPDATE: Authorities Release Identity of Man Shot Dead in Newark’s Central Ward

Officials at the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has released the identity of a man fatally shot near a housing development in Newark’s Central Ward Friday afternoon.

According to police, at around 1:20 p.m., multiple rounds of gunfire erupted in the 70’s block of Hayes Street at New Community Corporation.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a severely injured Mr. Michael Wyche, 30 of Newark lying on the ground at that location.

Police say Wyche was rushed to University Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

Officials at the hospital notified police of a second person suffering a bullet wound who entered the emergency room. His injuries were non-life-threatening.

Police believe this victim suffered his injury at the Hayes Street crime scene.

While canvassing the area for suspects, police found then engaged in a chase of a vehicle occupied by a potential suspect that ultimately resulted in a collision near the intersection of Broad and South streets.

One person was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered at the crash scene according to reports.

County officials have not released the name of the individual arrested or charges filed at this time.

The incident is under an active and ongoing investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
