According to statements released by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, the Hillsborough Township Police Department, and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability, officers were called to a residence on Cornell Trail on Thursday, September 25, for a welfare check.

Police initially attempted to make contact with the occupants around 4:12 p.m. but received no response.

At approximately 6:23 p.m., officers entered the home and encountered an armed man on the second floor. Authorities said the individual advanced toward police with a knife, prompting an officer to fire his weapon.

The man was struck, and officers immediately began life-saving measures before he was transported to a nearby trauma center.

As of Friday, he remains hospitalized in critical condition.

While clearing the home, investigators discovered the bodies of an adult male and an adult female in separate upstairs bedrooms.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Somerset.

Officials have not released the identities of the victims, the injured man, or the officers involved.
