UPDATE: Authorities Identify Newark Teen Killed by Gunfire on New Year's Day in East Orange

Essex County authorities have identified a teenaged legal adult who was gunned down on a street in East Orange following a party near a hall on New Year's morning.

According to The Essex County Prosecutor's Office, Ibn Downey, 18, of Newark of killed when a gunman fired multiple times in his direction striking him near 178 North 17th Street at around 12:45 a.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, officials for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said they found Downey in an unconscious and unresponsive state suffering gunshot wounds.

Authorities say a search of the area had officers also locate a second victim suffering a non-life threatening gunshot wound. This victim was transported to the hospital for treatment according to The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Sources at the scene say Downey may have attended a party at the hall where a fist fight broke out between several females, but it is not clear if Downey was involved in the altercation.

Police set up a crime scene where they marked off over a dozen pieces of evidence including shell casings.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation by The Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Downey's death was the first homicide marked off in New Jersey for 2019 according to officials.

There were no arrests reported.
