UPDATE: Authorities Identify Newark Man Fatally Struck by Car in Kearny

Kearny Police are investigating a pedestrian strike the killed a Newark man on a highway in the city. 

According to police, on December 19th at 7:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to Truck Routes 1&9 near Hackensack Avenue on a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. 

The Kearny Police Department said a preliminary investigation indicated a 28-year-old Jersey City woman was driving southbound on Routes 1&9 in a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee when she struck Mr. Wilbert Founder, 59, of Newark, a man who had been a pedestrian on the highway.

Doctors pronounced Founder dead at the scene. Police have not confirmed why Mr. Founder was on the highway. 

No charges have been filed against the driver. 

The incident remains under investigation by the KPD Traffic Bureau and the Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
