Officials in Essex County announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigating a fatal shooting.
According to authorities, Mr. Akram Brown, 42, of Newark, was shot on Mt. Vernon Place in the City of Newark.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:02 pm yesterday, police said.
Mr. Brown was reportedly holding, shielding a 2-year-old child from rapid gunfire. Brown was a business owner on the street witnesses said.
One other person suffered non-fatal injuries in the shooting.
No arrests have been made at this time.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
