UPDATE: Authorities Identify Man Shot Dead in Newark's South Ward

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a Newark man on Monday.

Authorities say at approximately 1:20 p.m., Newark police officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 600 block Hunterdon Street.

Arriving officers observed an unresponsive male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

The male, who has been identified as Travonn Bermudez, age 21, was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:41 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is currently active and ongoing, according to Fennelly.
