UPDATE: Authorities Apprehend Irvington Homicide Suspects

Newark -- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and announced today that two men have been arrested for the May 2017 murder of Jawad R. Smith, 22, of Newark.

Yesterday, police arrested and charged Mr. Kyshan A. Samuel, 24, of Irvington with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Police said Samuel is the second suspect taken into custody.

In August, police arrested and charged Mr. Wykeel Johnson, 20, of Newark with murder and weapons offenses.

Authorities said Smith the suspects fatally shot in the 400 block of Grove Street in Irvington on May 27.

According to authorities, the preliminary investigation indicates the victim was walking on Grove Street when he was approached by two males who shot him multiple times and fled.

Both defendants are currently being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

These are accusations.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
