UPDATE: Arrest Made in Theft of Newark Police Officer’s Body Camera

Newark

Police officials in Newark are reporting the arrest of Mr. Dwayne Small, 45, of Middlesex, NJ, in connection with the theft of a police officer’s body-worn camera on Friday.

According to a statement released by Newark Public Saftey Director Anthony Ambrose, shortly before 4 p.m., an officer’s body-worn camera was stolen after it was pushed off the officer’s vest in the 900-block of Bergen Street.

Director Ambrose said after taking the body worn camera, the suspect ran northbound on Bergen Street.

Officers from the 5th Precinct investigating the incident located Small with the camera Saturday then immediately arrested.

Police charged Small with Theft and Receiving Stolen Property according to Director Ambrose.

“I commend these officers for their swift action and determination in recovering this stolen equipment,” Director Ambrose said. “Their commitment and tireless work is an invaluable asset to the people of the City of Newark.”

These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
