UPDATE: Armed Carjacking Suspect Pinned Under Vehicle in Newark's South Ward

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that officers of the 5th Precinct rescued carjacking suspect, Jared Walker, 22, of Newark, by freeing him from beneath a vehicle before he was arrested today.

Police say at approximately 2:05 a.m., a man driving in the 100 block of Mapes Avenue was approached by a male with a gun who threatened his life.

The suspect entered the victim’s vehicle, robbed him of his cash and personal items and drove off with the victim still inside the car according to police.

The victim ran from the vehicle at Mapes Avenue and Hunterdon Street and called police.

Officers patrolling the area of Elizabeth Avenue and West Peddie Street observed the carjacked vehicle and attempted a motor vehicle stop.

The suspect did not pull over and continued driving on Hawthorne Avenue, striking a police vehicle and crashing into an empty lot where he was located on the ground, pinned under a police vehicle.

Responding officers lifted the vehicle to free the suspect, who was arrested without further incident.

A handgun was retrieved and the suspect, Jared Walker, and four police officers were transported to University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Walker faces charges of kidnapping, carjacking, robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession.

These charges are merely accusations.

This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
