Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark Police are on the search for an armed suspect who killed a Newark resident and injured another person in the city’s Vailsburg section Sunday night.
According to authorities, just before 9 p.m., officials at University Hospitals notified Newark Police when a gunshot victim entered the emergency department seeking help.
Officers who arrived at the hospital were told that the incident happened in the 800 block of 18th Avenue near Columbia.
Detectives learned that a gunman fired at two people inside the store at 899 18th Avenue. One of the victims, Mr. Al-Tariq Johnson, 46, of Newark, succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities said the second victim is being treated at University Hospital.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is the lead agency for this active and ongoing investigation.
No arrests have been reported.
