UPDATE: 43-Year-Old Irvington Man Killed by Newark Gunfire

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose, III have announced that authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Newark early Sunday morning.

Officials say at approximately 2:40 am, Newark police officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 100 block of Hartford Street.

Arriving officers located a male, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:18 am.

The victim has been identified as Mr. Clifford Cajou, 43, of Irvington, NJ, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

This incident is being investigated by the Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
