UPDATE: 38-Year-Old Man Shot Dead in Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating the death of a Newark man, who was found suffering from an apparent gunshot wound in Newark Thursday night.

According to a statement released by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, at approximately 9:45 pm, Newark police officers responded to the intersection of Vassar Avenue and Parkview Terrace where officers observed an unresponsive male at this location.

EMS rushed the victim, identified as Mr. Najee Odom, 38, to University Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at 10:20 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

Chief Fennelly said the investigation is active and ongoing at this time.
