UPDATE: 31-Year-Old Man Charged in Unprovoked Attack That Left Newark Man Dead

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced today that Tyrone Johnson, 53, of Newark was struck by an apparent stranger on Broad Street in Newark, fell and later died from his injuries.

Officials say the suspect Oscar Kadua, 31, of Newark has been arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter.

The incident happened on May 30 at approximately 8:21 p.m. in the 600 block of Broad Street in Newark. It is alleged that the victim was walking north on Broad Street crossing New Street when he was struck during what appears to be an unprovoked attack.

The victim fell and sustained head trauma.

Johnson was rushed to Rutgers University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:51 p.m.
