UPDATE: 27-Year-Old Man Struck, Killed by Vehicle in Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray has announced that authorities are investigating an incident in which a pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle in the area of 247 Frelinghuysen Avenue earlier this morning.

Authorities said shortly after 7:00 a.m. this morning, Newark police officers responded to reports of a pedestrian struck at the above location.

Arriving officers located a 27 -year-old male from Newark, who had been struck by a motor vehicle. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:26 a.m.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the victim was struck by an SUV as he attempted to cross Frelinghuysen Avenue, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

The driver of the SUV remained on the scene, according to Fennelly.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

Authorities said no charges have been filed at his time, according to Fennelly, who added that the investigation is continuing.
