According to a statement released by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the vicinity of 149 Isabella Avenue around midnight.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a male victim suffering multiple gunshot wounds in his chest.
Police say the victim was rushed to University Hospital, where medical professionals began unsuccessful treatment on the unidentified male.
Essex County Prosecutor's Office officials said doctors pronounced Mr. Nazim Cheeks, 19, of Newark dead a short time later.
According to reports, the suspect exited a black or dark-colored vehicle with a strip and began repeatedly firing shots at the victim before speeding away from the scene.
No arrests have been reported.
