UPDATE: 17-Year-Old Shot Dead on Elizabeth Avenue in Newark

Police are continuing to investigate the motive behind a shooting that left a teenage boy dead in Newark's South Ward on Sunday morning.

According to The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, at approximately 4 a.m., gunfire rang out in the 70’s block of Elizabeth Avenue, sending police to the scene to investigate.

Upon officers’ arrival, they found Shahir Minatee, 17, suffering gunshot wounds in his head at that location.

Medical Personnel pronounced Minatee dead at the scene.

Authorities said a 17-year-old Newark resident has been charged with Aggravated Manslaughter and weapons offenses.

The juvenile suspect has been remanded to the Essex County Youth Correctional Center, according to county officials.

The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing.
