UPDATE: 17-Year-Old Arrested After Crashing Stolen Car into Van in Rahway

Authorities announced that the 16-year-old driver of a stolen vehicle has been arrested and charged following the Friday afternoon crash.

According to police, at approximately 3:25 p.m., Rahway police officers responded to a serious two car accident in the area of West Emerson Avenue and Broad Street .

Witnesses reported that the occupants from one of the vehicles involved in the crash fled the scene on foot. Officers quickly discovered that the vehicle involved was stolen from Bridgewater Township.

Responding officers provided immediate aid to the victims, two of whom were seriously injured in the crash.

Additional officers canvassed the area, and located the suspects who fled the scene of the crash.

One juvenile - identified as was the driver of the vehicle, and was subsequently arrested.

The juvenile driver was charged with aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an injury accident, receiving stolen property, and joyriding.

The juvenile is currently in custody at the Union County Juvenile Detention Center in Linden.

The vehicle struck by the stolen car was occupied by seven people. Three people were treated for minor injuries by Rahway Emergency Medical Services, Rahway Hospital Paramedics, and Union County Emergency Medical Services.

Two children sustained very serious injuries in the crash. One child was ejected from the car, and was airlifted by New Jersey State Police Medivac North Star. According to authorities, boy is reported to be in critical but stable condition.

The other child was taken by ambulance to University Hospital in Newark and treated for less severe injuries, and is in stable condition.

This is a continuing investigation and names of involved parties are not currently available for release.

The Rahway Police Department is actively investigating this incident with the assistance of the Union County Police, Union County Sheriffs crime Scene Unit, and the Union County Homicide Task Force.
